US identifies Nigerian and others as ISIS financial backers

The United States has sanctioned a Nigerian national and several international entities for allegedly providing financial support to ISIS operations across multiple countries.

The United States government has officially labeled a Nigerian citizen alongside various international entities and individuals as terrorism financiers. These parties are accused of acting as money brokers for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, commonly known as ISIS.

Thomas Pigott, a representative for the US Department of State, confirmed that the sanctions target three people and six organizations involved in moving resources for the group. This clandestine network reportedly operates across France, Syria, Turkey, and Nigeria, facilitating international monetary transfers for terrorist activities.

The US government emphasized that these sanctions aim to sever the financial support systems that ISIS utilizes to carry out attacks and aid regional offshoots. The list includes a France-based individual accused of sharing explosives expertise, a Syria-based operative using cryptocurrency to move funds, and a Nigerian money changer whose businesses acted as a hub for illicit financing. These actions reflect an ongoing effort by the United States to dismantle the global funding infrastructure supporting ISIS.
