Nigerian Senate Schedules Vote on State Police Bill

The Nigerian Senate has finalized Wednesday for the voting process on the state police bill, an initiative aimed at restructuring the country’s security architecture.

The Nigerian Senate is set to conduct a vote on the state police bill this Wednesday. Legislators returned early from their break to prioritize this constitutional amendment, which aims to decentralize the national security structure to combat rising security threats.

President Bola Tinubu introduced an executive version of the legislation to the Senate on Tuesday via a letter dated June 15, 2026. This proposal advocates for a dual structure where federal and state police forces function concurrently.

During Tuesday’s session, Senate President Godswill Akpabio highlighted the importance of this shift, calling it a vital move for national security reform. The bill was subsequently sent to the Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Constitution Review, led by Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, for final assessment.

Akpabio urged all senators to attend the upcoming session to ensure the bill gains necessary support. He noted that the proceedings will be broadcast live so citizens can observe their representatives’ actions on this critical issue.
