The Lagos State Government recently shut down the i-Fitness center near the Jakande Roundabout in Lekki, Eti-Osa. This action was taken after officials discovered that the gym was pumping untreated sewage directly into local drainage systems.
Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, confirmed the closure via social media. The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) led the operation on Tuesday, citing the gym’s actions as a severe public health risk and an environmental violation.
The LSWMO stated that the facility used a pipe to drain raw waste into the public sewer system, creating a public nuisance. Officials emphasized that this behavior is illegal and threatens the health of local residents. The government maintains that such enforcement is necessary to uphold sanitation laws across the state.
State authorities have issued a stern warning to other businesses, declaring that those who ignore environmental regulations will face penalties or potential prosecution. The government continues to urge all commercial entities to utilize proper waste disposal methods to protect the public and the surrounding environment.
