Presidency Rejects Peter Obi’s Resignation Demand, Labels It Juvenile and Empty

The presidency has rejected Peter Obi’s demand for President Tinubu’s resignation, labeling the call a misguided distraction that ignores Nigeria’s presidential system and recent economic and security progress.

The Nigerian presidency has dismissed the call by Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to step down. Bayo Onanuela, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, characterized the demand as a baseless distraction from the administration’s governance efforts.

According to the official statement, Obi’s comparison of Nigeria to the United Kingdom’s parliamentary system is a fundamental misunderstanding of Nigeria’s fixed-term presidential governance model. The presidency highlighted recent electoral successes for Tinubu’s party in regions like Ekiti, Nasarawa, and Rivers as evidence of his continued popular support.

Addressing claims regarding national security, the administration emphasized that it has neutralized numerous terrorist leaders and successfully rescued hundreds of individuals from captivity. The statement argued that security investments in technology and personnel demonstrate a proactive commitment to resolving long-standing issues. It also criticized Obi’s track record, suggesting his performance as the former governor of Anambra state was insufficient to justify his current critiques.

The presidency also disputed claims of economic failure, citing record-high foreign reserves exceeding $50 billion and increased oil production. The government touted reforms such as the Electricity Act, which decentralizes power generation, and the introduction of interest-free student loans as key indicators of progress. Officials maintained that current inflation is a global phenomenon influenced by international tensions rather than domestic policy failure.

Concluding the response, the presidency labeled Obi’s actions as political theater and urged him to wait for the 2027 election to challenge the administration, rather than using social media to push for an early exit. The statement asserted that Tinubu remains focused on long-term national development despite external criticism.
