Islamic Cleric Detained by Osogbo Federal High Court Following Defamation Accusations

A Federal High Court in Osogbo has remanded Islamic cleric Jamiu Adeguwa into police custody regarding defamation charges, pending a bail hearing on June 26.

A Federal High Court in Osogbo has ordered Jamiu Adeguwa, an Islamic cleric, to be held at the Zone 11 Police Command. This ruling follows charges related to defamatory content allegedly posted online.

Justice Suleiman Hassan mandated that Adeguwa stay in police custody until his formal bail application is reviewed on June 26. Upon his arraignment for a single count of defamation, the defendant entered a plea of not guilty.

Prosecutor J. Famuyin stated that the incident occurred in Osogbo between July 4 and July 31, 2022. The cleric is accused of using the Al-Madrasatu Wahabiya social media page to distribute offensive and damaging information about the complainant. Such actions are cited as violations of the 2015 Cybercrimes Act.

Defense lawyer Oladayo Ogungbe requested bail for his client, but the prosecution challenged this request, suggesting the defendant should be moved to the Ilesa Correctional Centre. Justice Hassan ultimately opted to keep Adeguwa under police supervision until the scheduled court date.
