Due to the threat of record-breaking heat across England and Wales, four of the five planned horse racing fixtures in Britain for Wednesday have been canceled. The Met Office has implemented a rare red weather warning effective from Wednesday morning through Thursday night, with thermometer readings projected to hit up to 39C.
The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) mandates that any event located within a red warning zone must be abandoned. Furthermore, the regulation prohibits the transport of horses through areas currently under these extreme heat alerts. Consequently, the jumps meeting at Worcester and Flat races at Salisbury and Kempton were pulled from the schedule. Ffos Las, while technically situated outside the red zone, was also canceled because travel routes to the track pass through restricted high-risk regions.
Only the meeting at Carlisle in Cumbria remains on the calendar for Wednesday. The BHA noted they are maintaining contact with venues in amber zones to evaluate if additional safety protocols are required. Trainer Alex Hales backed the BHA’s decision, emphasizing that animal welfare remains the industry’s primary concern despite the logistical challenges posed by such weather.
