Law enforcement in Australia has intercepted 2.7 tonnes of cocaine, marking the biggest drug bust in the nation’s history. The illegal shipment, valued at approximately A$816m, was discovered hidden beneath false flooring inside shipping containers at an underground bunker in Londonderry, western Sydney.
Authorities arrested two suspects, aged 21 and 25, who tried to escape during the Friday operation. Both men have been charged with possessing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug and face potential life imprisonment. The shipment was reportedly brought into the country via Midge Point, North Queensland, under the direction of an organized crime syndicate.
The raid was a significant milestone in Operation Minjiang, an investigation that began in May after 40kg of cocaine was recovered from waters near a Midge Point boat ramp. While the suspects remain in custody, police continue to investigate the source of the drugs, collaborating with international partners. Additionally, a vessel suspected of being involved in the smuggling operation has been seized in the Solomon Islands. Investigations remain ongoing to identify all participants in this criminal scheme.
