Federal Court Mandates CAC to Reinstate NYCN Registration

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the CAC to restore the NYCN’s registration, reinstate its Board of Trustees, and dissolve the government-appointed interim management committee.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a ruling requiring the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) to reinstate the registration of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN). Furthermore, the court ordered the restoration of Ambassador Sukubo Sara-Igbe Sukubo and his fellow Board of Trustees members to their respective positions.

Presiding Judge Binta Nyako declared that the interim management committee, which was established by the CAC and the Ministry of Youth Development to manage the council, must be disbanded immediately. Justice Nyako clarified that the CAC lacks the legal authority to dictate leadership tenures or install caretaker committees for registered organizations, especially while related disputes remain under judicial review.

The legal challenge originated after the CAC revoked the NYCN’s registration certificate in October 2025 and subsequently installed an interim body led by Buhari Shehu. Ambassador Sukubo argued that these administrative actions were unconstitutional and bypassed ongoing legal processes. While the judge stopped short of declaring specific sections of the Companies and Allied Matters Act unconstitutional, she ruled that the defendants’ actions were unlawful in this instance. Consequently, the court has ordered a return to the status quo that existed prior to the CAC’s intervention, pending the conclusion of further appeals.
