Social commentator Mahdi Shehu has publicly labeled Northern Nigeria a territory of the living dead, highlighting deep-seated anxieties regarding the region’s current state. Writing on his social media platform on Saturday, Shehu argued that residents exist physically but remain paralyzed by widespread insecurity and economic distress.
He suggested that trauma and pervasive fear have incapacitated the population, leaving them unable to address the harsh realities of their environment or push for necessary reforms. Shehu directed sharp criticism toward the region’s leadership, faulting an ineffective elite class and traditional institutions for failing to provide guidance or accountability.
The commentator further described the citizenry as passive and lacking vision, attributing their current state to a combination of greed, envy, and systemic neglect. In a stinging conclusion, Shehu remarked that the region has effectively died, noting that even religious leaders are absent for traditional funeral rites because they are beholden to specific political agendas.
