The Abia State chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Building has issued an urgent plea for improved adherence to construction regulations. This request follows the recent failure of two nearly finished structures located at New Jerusalem Road 8 and Eze Iheme Road within the Osisioma Local Government Area. Fortunately, neither collapse resulted in any casualties.
Following an on-site inspection this past Saturday, institute representatives argued that a combined effort from government authorities and industry professionals is necessary to halt the trend of structural failures. Wisdom Okore, who leads the group’s Practice Committee, emphasized that continuous training and workshop programs are essential to ensure that production standards are met consistently. He noted that certified builders bear the legal duty of managing construction projects to align with official safety requirements.
Okore specifically encouraged the Abia State Government to improve how it enforces the National Building Code and local planning mandates to lower the risk of future disasters. Echoing these sentiments, the chapter’s chairman, Chinedu Nwanosike, stressed that all individuals working in construction must maintain high ethical standards and follow approved building procedures to prevent further incidents.
