Minister Umahi addresses flooding issues and project timelines for Lagos-Calabar Highway

Minister Dave Umahi has dismissed reports of flooding on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, attributing water accumulation to railway design provisions and confirming that all major federal infrastructure projects will meet their 2031 completion target.

Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, has rejected claims that flooding is compromising the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. He reaffirmed that this project, alongside other key federal road initiatives, remains on track for completion by 2031.

During a site inspection of the first two sections of the highway with National Assembly members, Umahi addressed public complaints regarding water retention and road surface issues. He clarified that the water observed was localized within the median, a space specifically engineered to house a future railway line. Because rail construction has not yet begun, the minister has ordered contractors to install interim drainage systems to manage water flow.

Addressing concerns about the project’s longevity, Umahi insisted the highway will not be abandoned. He highlighted that 47 kilometers of Section One are finished, and the 55-kilometer Section Two is expected to reach substantial completion by November. He acknowledged that challenging, swampy terrain and environmental restrictions have required occasional route adjustments, emphasizing that engineering plans must remain flexible to suit site conditions.

The minister praised Hitech Construction Company for its continued work despite government payment delays, describing their commitment as vital to national progress. Beyond this highway, Umahi noted that work is proceeding on other major infrastructure projects, including the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway. He concluded by assuring the public that President Bola Tinubu’s administration is fully committed to delivering all four major legacy road projects by 2031 with the support of reputable contractors.
