Fatal Train Collision Near Bedford Under Investigation

A collision between two passenger trains near Bedford has caused one fatality and 89 injuries, prompting a major incident response and a full safety investigation.

A collision between two East Midlands Railway passenger trains near Bedford on Friday evening has resulted in the death of a train driver and left 89 individuals injured. The incident, which occurred shortly after 17:00 BST, involved a stationary train being struck by another service near the Elstow interchange. Of those injured, 11 sustained very serious injuries, while others received treatment for serious or minor conditions.

British Transport Police declared a major incident and, alongside the Rail Accident Investigation Branch, are working to determine the cause of the crash. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed his condolences to the victim’s family and praised the rapid response of emergency personnel, who deployed significant resources including an air ambulance. Local hospitals have requested that the public avoid emergency rooms unless necessary to prioritize those affected by the disaster.

Rail travel faces significant disruptions throughout the weekend. East Midlands Railway has suspended services between the Midlands and London St Pancras, advising passengers to utilize alternative transport. While authorities conduct their investigation, the focus remains on recovery efforts and ensuring the safety of the railway network.
