US Central Command characterized the operation as a defensive measure intended to protect American personnel from regional threats.
Capt. Tim Hawkins, a spokesperson for Central Command, stated that the military remains committed to shielding its forces while observing the existing ceasefire.
Iran has not yet issued a formal response to the strikes. Previously, Iranian foreign ministry representative Esmail Baqai remarked that while diplomatic discussions have progressed, a definitive agreement remains distant.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated that a resolution is still achievable, noting recent high-level diplomatic meetings involving Iran and Qatar. Rubio emphasized that the Strait of Hormuz must remain operational, labeling recent Iranian activities there as unlawful and unsustainable. The strikes were reportedly concentrated near Bandar Abbas, a key naval hub.
Negotiations currently center on a potential 60-day extension of the ceasefire, the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, and future frameworks for addressing Iran’s nuclear program.
Reports suggest that communication difficulties involving Iranian leadership may be hindering the speed of these talks. While President Donald Trump has expressed an interest in a favorable deal, significant disagreements regarding sanctions, financial assets, and nuclear enrichment levels remain unresolved.
