Former Manchester United star Gary Neville has outlined four specific areas where new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso must recruit this summer.
Alonso is scheduled to begin his four-year tenure on July 1, replacing interim manager Liam Rosenior.
Rosenior had held the position for 106 days following the mid-season sacking of Enzo Maresca.
Currently sitting 10th in the Premier League, Chelsea faces a difficult end to the season. While Neville acknowledges the talent present in the current midfield, he argues that the club’s policy of only signing young prospects is a major mistake.
Speaking on his Sky Sports podcast, Neville insisted that ownership group BlueCo must pivot toward adding veteran experience to balance the squad.
Neville explicitly stated that Alonso needs to prioritize high-level acquisitions to steady the team. Specifically, the analyst highlighted the urgent need for a starting goalkeeper, one or two experienced centre-backs, and a reliable, powerful centre-forward to lead the line.
While he noted that players like Caicedo, Fernandez, and Lavia provide a solid foundation in midfield, the lack of depth elsewhere remains a concern.
With only two games left in the campaign, Chelsea looks to improve their standing. A win against Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday could lift the team above Brentford, potentially securing a place in the Europa Conference League.
