Ferdinand Shares Thoughts on Alonso Move
Former Manchester United star Rio Ferdinand has publicly shared his astonishment following Xabi Alonso’s appointment as the new Chelsea manager. Alonso, a celebrated figure from his time at Liverpool, finalized a four-year deal with the Stamford Bridge club.
During his playing days, Alonso appeared in 210 games for Liverpool and played a crucial role in their famous 2005 Champions League triumph. Although he left the Merseyside outfit in 2009, he has long maintained a strong emotional connection to the team.
Many observers expected Alonso to eventually lead Liverpool, especially given the recent difficulties faced by current coach Arne Slot. However, Chelsea moved quickly to secure the Spaniard as the permanent replacement for Liam Rosenior.
Speaking on his show, Rio Ferdinand Presents, the former defender admitted he expected the coach to wait for a potential opening at Anfield. Ferdinand noted that given Alonso’s history and vocal affection for Liverpool, it seemed inevitable that he would eventually replace Slot if he had shown more restraint.
Alonso is now tasked with turning Chelsea into a consistent trophy-contending side.
