Police Apprehend Man for Orchestrating Fake Job Scam Against Kano Students
Richard Peter, a 32-year-old resident of Lagos, is currently detained by Zone One police headquarters in Kano. Authorities arrested the suspect following allegations that he lured Bayero University students into a fraudulent ushering job scheme.
Police successfully retrieved 29 mobile phones and various personal belongings linked to the victims.
DSP Abdullahi Hussaini, the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, stated that the arrest followed a formal complaint filed by a group of students headed by Clementina Paul.
Investigations indicate that on May 10, 2026, Peter utilized an individual named Faith Dauda to invite 38 female students to the Mairabo Hotel in Sabon Gari.
Upon arrival, the victims were instructed to change their clothes and leave their valuables behind, falsely claiming that phones were prohibited at the event site.
The suspect subsequently escorted the students to a restaurant, ordered food totaling 6,000 Naira per person, and fled the premises.
When the students returned from the meal, they found their belongings missing. Law enforcement later tracked one of the stolen devices to the Kano Line Motor Park.
While Peter attempted to flee toward Lagos, police intercepted his vehicle in Zaria, Kaduna State. He remains in custody at the Zonal Criminal Investigation Department and faces upcoming court charges.
Assistant Inspector-General of Police Garba Ahmed commended the officers for their rapid response and reiterated the command’s dedication to curbing fraudulent activities in the region.
