Law enforcement agencies have initiated an intensive search and rescue mission after 15 people were kidnapped on the Calabar-Itu highway in Cross River State.

The abduction took place on the morning of Sunday, April 19, 2026, highlighting the increasing dangers on this vital road connecting Cross River and Akwa Ibom states.

SP Irene Ugbo, the spokesperson for the Cross River State Police, reported that armed individuals ambushed several vehicles in a remote section of the road.

She confirmed that a joint task force is currently working to secure the safe release of the captives. Tactical teams have been stationed at key points to monitor the area and pursue the suspects.

Reports from witnesses describe a scene of chaos, noting that the attackers fired shots to intimidate travelers before dragging their victims into the surrounding woods. Local motorists have repeatedly voiced concerns about criminal activity on this corridor and have long urged authorities to increase patrols.

Cross River State Commissioner of Police, CP Gyogon Grimah, has called for public cooperation as the investigation proceeds.

He emphasized the commitment of the police to capture the perpetrators and bring them to justice, while urging citizens to report any useful information that could assist in the rescue operation.
