China Suspends Marathon Runners For Stopping To Take Pictures And Hoarding Supplies
The Sichuan Athletics Association has issued two-year bans to a pair of participants following disruptive behavior during the Chengdu Marathon held last Sunday.
The sanctions targeted a female runner, identified by her surname Wang, and a male runner surnamed Zhang, after footage of their actions went viral on Chinese social media platforms like Weibo.
Both individuals were disqualified from the event and are now prohibited from entering any marathons within Sichuan province until 2028.
According to official statements, Wang was penalized for suddenly stopping mid-race to perform a full split and pose for a photograph, an act the association labeled an “obstructive foul” that endangered other competitors.

Meanwhile, Zhang was disciplined for hoarding an excessive amount of race supplies. Images circulated online showed him carrying a transparent backpack overflowing with energy gels and snacks intended for general participant use at supply stations.

The incidents have sparked significant public backlash, with some social media users calling for even stricter permanent bans to combat “extreme selfishness” within the sport.
This controversy is the latest in a series of disciplinary issues affecting China’s rapidly expanding marathon circuit, which has recently seen cases ranging from course-cutting and the use of rental bikes to organizational errors at finish lines.
The regional athletic body emphasized that these suspensions are necessary to uphold fair competition and ensure the safety of all future participants.
