Trump Issues Ultimatum to NATO Over Strait of Hormuz Standoff

President Donald Trump has delivered a sharp warning to NATO, suggesting the alliance’s future could be jeopardized if member nations refuse to help the United States reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Following recent military strikes by the U.S. and Israel against Iranian targets, Tehran restricted access to the narrow waterway, which serves as a passage for roughly 20% of the world’s oil.

In a blunt interview, the President argued that because European and Asian countries are the primary recipients of Gulf energy, they should bear the responsibility and costs of securing the route.

The President expressed particular frustration with the lack of immediate military commitments from long-standing partners, specifically mentioning a slow response from the United Kingdom.

He emphasized that while the U.S. provided significant aid to Europe during the conflict in Ukraine, he now expects a reciprocal effort to clear the Gulf of Iranian mines and drones.

Trump indicated that he expects “whatever it takes” to stabilize the region, including the deployment of naval assets like minesweepers and specialized forces.

Beyond NATO, the President is pressuring China to intervene before a scheduled summit with President Xi Jinping. He noted that Beijing’s heavy reliance on the Strait makes their cooperation essential, and he hinted that the high-stakes meeting could be postponed if no progress is made.

As oil prices continue to climb due to the disruption, Trump warned that the U.S. remains prepared to escalate military action against Iranian oil infrastructure, such as the Kharg Island export hub, if the blockade persists.
