Iranian Captain Becomes Fifth Team Member to Withdraw Australian Asylum Bid
Zahra Ghanbari, the captain of the Iranian women’s national football team, has officially canceled her request for asylum in Australia, marking her as the fifth member of the delegation to reverse their decision to defect.
According to reports from the state-run news agency IRNA, Ghanbari is currently traveling through Malaysia on her way back to Iran. Her departure follows a series of similar reversals over the weekend, leaving only two of the seven original asylum seekers in Australia.
While Iranian government media has celebrated these returns as a triumph of “national spirit” and “patriotism,” human rights advocates and exiled athletes offer a different perspective.
Activists, including former national player Shiva Amini, allege that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Iran’s Football Federation have subjected the players’ families to relentless, systemic pressure to force their return.
They suggest that the decision to abandon the asylum bid was likely driven by unbearable threats against loved ones rather than a sudden shift in political sentiment.

Australian Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke confirmed that the government facilitated safe environments and genuine choices for the women but acknowledged the extreme difficulty of their situation.
He noted that while Australia can provide protection, it cannot erase the personal and geopolitical context weighing on the players.
The initial move to seek sanctuary was sparked by fears of state retribution after the team refused to sing the Iranian national anthem during their Asian Cup opener—a gesture that led to them being publicly branded as “traitors” by pro-regime media.
