Kano Pure Water Producers Hike Sachet Prices Amid “Unsustainable” Costs

The Kano State branch of the Association of Table Water Producers (ATWAP) has announced a significant price increase for sachet water, citing a sharp rise in operational expenses.

According to the association’s spokesperson, Anas Idris Hassan, the wholesale price for a bag of “pure water” has been raised from ₦220 to a minimum of ₦300 across the state.

This adjustment stems from a reported 66% surge in the cost of essential raw materials. Specifically, packaging film prices have reached ₦3,700, while fuel and gas costs have climbed to ₦1,500 per litre.

These financial pressures are compounded by an unreliable national power grid, forcing manufacturers to rely almost exclusively on expensive diesel generators.

Despite the hike, ATWAP Chairman Ahmad Bala Hudu emphasized that there would be zero tolerance for cutting corners. He warned that all factories must continue to adhere to strict purification and reverse osmosis standards.

To enforce this, the association is partnering with health authorities to conduct facility inspections, with “quack” producers facing immediate legal action. The leadership appealed to Kano residents for patience, noting that the price review was a necessary measure to prevent the industry’s total collapse during the Ramadan season.
