Elon Musk Launches Grokipedia as AI Rival to Wikipedia
Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has officially launched Grokipedia, an AI-powered encyclopedia aimed at competing with Wikipedia, which Musk has frequently accused of political bias.
Released on Monday in its version 0.1 form, Grokipedia debuted with more than 2.88 million articles, a fraction of Wikipedia’s English database of over seven million. Musk stated that version 1.0, currently in development, will be “ten times better” than the current release, which he claims already surpasses Wikipedia.
Sharing the platform’s mission on X, Musk wrote, “The goal of Grok and Grokipedia.com is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. We will never be perfect, but we shall nonetheless strive toward that goal.”
The launch, originally planned for late September, was delayed so the team could “purge out the propaganda,” according to Musk.
The billionaire has long criticized Wikipedia, asserting that it is “run by far-left activists” and suffers from “extreme left-wing bias,” making it unreliable for use in X’s Community Notes feature.
Grokipedia’s entries are primarily generated through artificial intelligence and Musk’s own AI assistant, Grok.
An article about Musk on Grokipedia reflects this perspective, describing him as a figure who has “influenced debates on technological innovation, demographic decline, and institutional bias, often through X,” while criticizing traditional media outlets for what it calls “systemic left-leaning tendencies.”
In contrast, Wikipedia, launched in 2001, remains a volunteer-driven project that relies on public donations and maintains a commitment to presenting information from a “neutral point of view.”
