Tinubu Hails ‘Baba Ijebu’ Kessington Adebutu At 90, Describes Him As A National Icon And Silent Giver
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated businessman and philanthropist Chief Kessington Adebukunola Adebutu, popularly known as Baba Ijebu, on his 90th birthday, lauding him as “a national icon and role model whose life reflects integrity, compassion, and enduring service to humanity.”
In a statement issued by the State House on Friday, President Tinubu celebrated Adebutu’s extraordinary journey from humble beginnings in Iperu-Iremo, Ogun State, to becoming one of Nigeria’s most influential entrepreneurs and benefactors.
“From a humble background in the serene town of Iperu-Iremo, Chief Adebutu rose to national prominence as a businessman, philanthropist, and cultural icon who embodies the virtues of hard work, honour, and compassion,” Tinubu said.
Chief Adebutu, born on October 24, 1935, is the founder of Premier Lotto Limited, operators of the iconic Baba Ijebu brand, which revolutionized Nigeria’s modern lottery industry. Since its incorporation in 2001, the company has grown into one of the largest gaming enterprises in the country, creating thousands of jobs and redefining the sector’s business landscape.
Beyond his business empire, Adebutu has made remarkable humanitarian contributions through the Kessington Adebukunola Adebutu Foundation (KAAF), which funds scholarships, medical interventions, and empowerment programmes for youths across Nigeria.
Tinubu praised the nonagenarian’s generosity, describing him as “a silent giver who has touched lives without fanfare,” adding that his philanthropy has transformed education, healthcare, and social welfare nationwide.
“Through his foundation, countless indigent students have received scholarships, while communities have benefited from his support for youth programmes, sports, culture, and social development,” the President noted.
The President also reflected on their personal relationship, calling Adebutu “a reliable brother, loyal, honest, and dependable. A gentleman whose humility and integrity continue to inspire others.”
Highlighting his impact beyond business, Tinubu said Adebutu has also contributed immensely to strengthening democracy, fostering national unity, and promoting peace and good governance.
The President further recognized Adebutu’s cultural influence and his traditional titles, including Odole-Oodua of Ile-Ife, which underscore his role in preserving Yoruba heritage and promoting cultural pride.
“Chief Adebutu’s remarkable contributions to business, philanthropy, culture, and national development are footprints that will endure across generations. He has shown that wealth is best measured by the number of lives touched,” Tinubu said.
On behalf of the Federal Government, the President wished the renowned industrialist good health and many more years of service to the nation.
“On this special anniversary of his 90th birthday, I thank Chief Adebutu for bringing joy, opportunities, and livelihoods to countless families through his enterprise and generosity. He remains a beacon of hope and a true Nigerian icon,” Tinubu concluded.
