BBC Bars Journalists From Wearing Black Lives Matter T-Shirts in Newsrooms

The BBC has prohibited its journalists from wearing Black Lives Matter T-shirts in newsrooms.

Director General Tim Davie explained that while the broadcaster firmly opposes racism, it would be inappropriate for reporters covering related stories to appear as if they were taking a political stance.

Speaking at the Sunday Times Culture Interview Forum during the Cheltenham Literature Festival, the 58-year-old stressed the need for neutrality.

Davie said journalists must avoid displaying any political affiliations in the newsroom, including wearing BLM shirts or using items showing political support.

He emphasized that impartiality is central to the BBC’s values, describing the Black Lives Matter movement as political in nature and therefore unsuitable for staff to publicly endorse while reporting.

He acknowledged that some newer employees have struggled to understand the policy but noted it is essential to maintain the broadcaster’s neutrality.

Davie also highlighted the importance of broadening diversity efforts, particularly in socioeconomic areas.

When asked about personal safety concerns linked to his public role, Davie admitted the position is demanding but said he remains committed to upholding impartiality within the organization. afo625 daddy
