Nigerians Face Cooking Gas Shortage as 12.5kg Cylinder Price Soars to N25,000

Nigerians across major cities are experiencing a shortage of cooking gas, with many gas stations running out of supply and others selling at steep prices.

According to the Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers (NALPGAM), Bassey Essien, the recent strike by the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) disrupted the distribution of the product nationwide.

“Dangote Petroleum Refinery is currently the largest local supplier of cooking gas in Nigeria. The PENGASSAN crisis disrupted distribution, leaving many dealers unable to restock. What we are seeing now is a demand-and-supply imbalance,” Essien said. He added that supply is expected to stabilize soon following the resolution of the strike.

As of this week, the cost of refilling a 12.5kg cylinder of cooking gas has surged to N25,000, up from N17,500 the previous week. The price of 1kg now ranges between N1,500 and N2,000, depending on the location.
