Airtel Africa Foundation And UNICEF Set To Impact 10 Million Lives By 2030
The Airtel Africa Foundation, in partnership with UNICEF, has launched an ambitious plan to transform over 10 million lives across the continent by 2030 through programmes focused on education, digital inclusion, environmental sustainability, and financial literacy.
The official launch took place on Tuesday in Lagos, where Airtel Nigeria CEO Dinesh Balsingh emphasized the foundation’s commitment to reshaping Africa’s socio-economic future.
“This foundation builds on our tradition of social investment with a sharper focus, a stronger platform, and a groundbreaking vision,” he said. “Our projects are already sparking change in classrooms, hospitals, rural communities, and cities where digital access is the bridge between stagnation and opportunity.”
The foundation is equipping schools with internet connectivity, devices, and teacher training to prepare students for the digital economy. Airtel Africa CEO Sunil Taldar revealed that the company has already reached over 1,200 schools, impacted more than one million students, and trained 17,000 teachers across its 14 markets, with Nigeria receiving a significant share of the investment.
Chairman of the Airtel Africa Foundation, Dr. Segun Ogunsanya, described the initiative as a “catalyst for change and a lasting legacy,” stressing that wealth is defined by giving rather than accumulation.
He highlighted the foundation’s projects, including zero-rated educational platforms, school refurbishments, and IT support for teachers. “We’ve already rebuilt six schools across Nigeria, one in each region, and we’re targeting 10 schools to achieve balanced impact,” Ogunsanya noted.
The foundation has also introduced the Airtel Africa Fellowship, which offers scholarships in STEM and technology fields, mentorship, internships, and exchange opportunities. Currently, two Nigerian students are studying in India under the programme, with an additional 100 scholarships set to be awarded.
Ogunsanya added that Airtel’s employees are playing a hands-on role, with over 1,100 staff volunteering in mentorship, coaching, and community service projects across the continent.
Since its inception in July 2024, the Airtel Africa Foundation has operated in 14 countries, bridging the digital divide and empowering young Africans with 21st-century skills to drive economic resilience.
