NiMet Forecasts Nationwide Rain, Thunderstorms From September 22–24
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has predicted widespread rain and thunderstorms across the country from Monday, September 22, to Wednesday, September 24.
In its forecast released in Abuja, NiMet said isolated thunderstorms and light rains would affect parts of Adamawa and Taraba on Monday morning, later spreading to Kaduna, Gombe, Kebbi, Zamfara, Bauchi, Southern Borno, and other northern states.
The central region is expected to experience cloudy skies with sunshine intervals, with thunderstorms and light rains in the morning across the FCT, Nasarawa, Niger, and Plateau, increasing to moderate rainfall in the afternoon and evening.
For the southern states, cloudy weather with sunshine intervals is forecast, along with isolated thunderstorms and light rains over Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Lagos, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom in the morning, followed by more widespread thunderstorms and moderate rain later in the day.
Similar conditions are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday, with northern and central regions seeing cloudy skies, intermittent sunshine, and scattered thunderstorms, while southern states may face thunderstorms, moderate rains, and possible flash floods in Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Akwa Ibom, and Rivers.
NiMet advised states at risk of flash floods to activate emergency response plans. It urged residents to drive carefully during rain, avoid standing under tall trees, disconnect electrical appliances during storms, and warned farmers not to apply fertilisers or pesticides just before rainfall. Airline operators were also urged to obtain airport-specific weather updates for flight planning.
