A 23-year-old woman in Moradabad’s Karula area, reportedly suffering from postpartum psychosis, allegedly placed her 15-day-old baby boy inside a refrigerator on Friday, September 7.

According to family members, the mother, unable to calm the crying infant, put him in the fridge and went to sleep. The baby’s grandmother, alerted by his cries, rushed to the kitchen, discovered him inside the refrigerator, and quickly rescued him.

The infant was taken to a doctor, who confirmed that he was stable. The hospital did not disclose the mother’s identity.

Relatives initially believed the woman’s behavior was caused by “evil forces” and attempted traditional rituals. When her condition did not improve, she was taken to Archna Raj Psychiatry and De-Addiction Centre.

Psychiatrist Dr. Kartikeya Gupta, who examined her, diagnosed the woman with postpartum psychosis a rare but severe mental health disorder that can occur after childbirth. She is currently undergoing counselling and treatment.
