Anambra First Lady Links Rising Domestic Violence To Economic Hardship
The First Lady of Anambra State, Nonye Soludo, has attributed the growing cases of domestic violence in Nigerian homes to the country’s current economic challenges.
Speaking at the Anambra Women’s Health Summit held to mark this year’s Women’s August Meeting, Mrs. Soludo said the strain of financial hardship has heightened tensions within families, often escalating into abuse.
Her words were….
“I think the level of violence in homes today is fuelled by hardship. Gender based violence is not just about men beating their wives, but some women beat men too. It could be through the way you talk to your husband.
There is hardship in the land we all know, men and women are feeling it equally, but I want to advise you to talk less, respect your husbands, and carry yourself well before them. The way you talk carelessly can lead a hot-tempered man to hit you. So you must know when to talk.
Look for a way to settle with your husband long after you have issues, and not at the very height of an argument. Women are smart, even though the man is the head, but the woman is the neck. You control the head and direct where it looks, but you must do it in a way that the head will not feel you are becoming overbearing, if not that can lead to trouble.”
