A high-speed car race in the Ipara area of Remo, Ogun State, ended in disaster on Monday, leaving five people dead including three suspected internet fraudsters and two residents..

During the contest, one driver reportedly lost control of his unregistered Lexus, veered off the road, and rammed into a roadside shop, killing two bystanders instantly. The driver and two passengers were trapped inside the wreckage with severe injuries before being rushed to different hospitals.

Videos circulating on social media show the mangled vehicle lodged in the damaged shop, bodies lying motionless on the ground, and onlookers wailing at the scene.

According to the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, the driver died at the scene while the other two occupants succumbed to their injuries in hospital. The two bystanders, identified as Akeem Ashiru and Shina Badejo, also died from the impact.

Akinbiyi said the accident happened near the Owolowo area when the Lexus, travelling at high speed toward Fidiwo, spun out of control and struck the victims by the roadside.

The incident comes just a day after another road tragedy in Abeokuta, where a passenger fell from a moving motorcycle and was crushed to death by an oncoming Volvo truck.
