Kano Signs $12.3 Million Deal With Sasakawa Africa to Boost Agricultural Mechanisation

The Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project (KSADP) has signed a revised Memorandum of Understanding valued at $12,347,071.44 with its implementation partner, the Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA), to procure agricultural machinery aimed at advancing mechanised farming and strengthening food security in the state.

According to a statement issued by Project Communication Specialist Ameen Yassar, the agreement includes the supply of tractors, combine harvesters, and various specialised equipment for land preparation, planting, harvesting, and processing.

KSADP State Project Coordinator Ibrahim Muhammad explained that the contract also covers the provision of planters, transplanters, boom sprayers, solar-powered water pumps, rice milling machines, onion storage technology, and other tools designed to modernise farming operations.

Muhammad emphasized that the updated MoU is intended to support Kano State’s transition from traditional farming methods to mechanised agriculture. This shift is expected to boost productivity among smallholder farmers, improve precision in farming activities, and reduce post-harvest losses.

He noted that KSADP is funded by the Islamic Development Bank, the Lives and Livelihoods Fund, and the Kano State Government, and is relying on the technical expertise of SAA to meet its agricultural development and poverty reduction goals.

The initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, Kano State’s Development Plan, and the Islamic Development Bank’s strategic objectives.

Also speaking, Dr. Godwin Atser, SAA Nigeria’s Country Director, described the agreement as a major milestone in the state’s agricultural reform journey and praised the five-year collaboration with KSADP as a notable achievement.
