Nigerian Senator Condemns Anti-Nigerian Protests In Ghana, Calls For Calm And Dialogue
Senator Bassey Aniekan has criticized recent anti-Nigerian protests in Ghana, where some demonstrators called for the deportation of Nigerians, accusing them of misrepresenting Ghanaian values. The lawmaker described the protests as unjust and based on harmful generalizations.
Aniekan, who chairs the Senate Committee on Diaspora and NGOs, defended Nigerians as “hardworking and law-abiding,” while acknowledging that a few bad actors shouldn’t tarnish the image of the wider Nigerian community.
He emphasized the strong diplomatic and cultural ties between Nigeria and Ghana, urging both nations to uphold ECOWAS values of peace and unity. “Ghana and Nigeria are brothers and should continue to live in peace,” he stated, stressing that dialogue is essential to resolving tensions.
The senator also advised Nigerians in Ghana to remain calm and avoid retaliation, debunking unverified claims of attacks on Nigerian businesses. He confirmed that Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Ojukwu, is engaging with Ghanaian authorities, and praised the diplomatic efforts of both countries’ envoys.
