Health Workers in Abia Warn of Rising HIV/AIDS Cases Amid USAID Funding Cuts

Health professionals in Abia State have raised concerns over a surge in HIV/AIDS cases, attributing the rise to funding cuts by former U.S. President Donald Trump, which affected the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) — a major global supplier of subsidized HIV/AIDS medication.

The warning came during a workshop attended by healthcare leaders and managers in the state. Participants voiced fears that the once-contained epidemic may spiral out of control, as many patients can no longer afford their treatment.

They emphasized the urgent need for local intervention strategies, warning that without immediate action, the situation could escalate into a serious public health crisis.

“HIV/AIDS cases are increasing because many patients have run out of medication due to policy changes under Trump that disrupted USAID’s drug supply,” one stakeholder said. “When HIV-positive individuals adhere to their treatment, their viral load is suppressed. Without these drugs, the risk grows.”

The health experts called for a revised action plan, increased public awareness campaigns, and the development of new strategies to address the shortfall caused by the withdrawal of international support.

Additionally, they highlighted issues with late delivery of healthcare products from donor agencies. One stakeholder expressed frustration, pointing out that a batch of medical supplies set to expire in September was only delivered in July, limiting its usability.

“How can we effectively use products that are so close to their expiration date?” one of them asked.
