FG Launches Mission 300 to Combat Energy Poverty Nationwide

In a renewed drive to combat energy poverty and expand electricity access across the country, the Federal Government will on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, host a high-level stakeholder engagement forum to fast-track the implementation of the National Energy Compact under the Mission 300 initiative.

The landmark forum, spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Power and the Federal Ministry of Finance in collaboration with Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL), aims to galvanize strategic partnerships, unlock investment, and accelerate reforms to achieve universal energy access by 2030.

Mission 300, an ambitious multi-stakeholder initiative, seeks to connect 300 million people across Africa to reliable electricity by the end of the decade. Nigeria is one of twelve African nations selected for the first phase of implementation.

The initiative is supported by leading global development institutions including the World Bank Group, African Development Bank, The Rockefeller Foundation, and the Global Energy Alliance for People and Planet.

“This initiative signals Nigeria’s bold commitment to scale up energy access, double electricity access growth rates, and expand the use of clean cooking solutions,” a statement from the Ministry of Power said.

To guide implementation, the government has established a Compact Delivery and Monitoring Unit (CDMU) to oversee progress on Nigeria’s National Energy Compact, first unveiled at the Dar es Salaam Energy Summit in January 2025.

The compact outlines ambitious, yet achievable targets:

Doubling Nigeria’s annual electricity access growth rate from 4% to 9%

Boosting access to clean cooking solutions from 22% to 25% annually

Tuesday’s Stakeholder Forum will bring together top government officials, development partners, energy investors, and private sector leaders to track progress, coordinate action, and showcase the government’s renewed commitment to sustainable energy access.

The forum also aims to create a predictable and results-driven environment to encourage private sector participation and mobilize finance for both on-grid and off-grid solutions.

As Nigeria grapples with persistent energy gaps affecting millions of households and businesses, the implementation of Mission 300 is seen as a transformative opportunity to leapfrog into a clean, inclusive, and electrified future.
