Ogun State Governor Urges Youths to Harness ICT Opportunities for Self-Reliance
Abeokuta, Ogun State, Governor Dapo Abiodun has called on Nigerian youths to embrace the vast potential of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to secure their future and achieve self-reliance. The governor made the appeal on Thursday during the unveiling of the ‘Window on America’ initiative, a collaborative ICT project between the American Consulate, GFA Technologies, and the Ogun State Government.
The project, hosted at the Ogun State Tech Hub in Abeokuta, is designed to bridge the gap between local talent and global technological advancements. Governor Abiodun emphasized that the initiative aligns with the state’s commitment to fostering digital innovation, job creation, and economic growth.
Public-Private Partnership: The project is a joint effort involving the Ogun State Bureau of Information Technology, GFA Technologies, and the U.S. Mission.
Key Offerings: Free programming courses, digital literacy workshops, English conversation clubs, and access to American-authored books and e-resources.
Vision: To create a platform for knowledge exchange and peer collaboration between Nigerian youths and their global counterparts.
Abiodun highlighted Ogun State’s investments in fibre optic connectivity, digital literacy programs, and innovation hubs, stressing that ICT is pivotal to sustainable development.
“This initiative is more than just a space, it’s a launchpad for global ideas meeting local ambitions,” he said. “We believe in collaboration over competition, and this project exemplifies how shared vision can expand opportunities.”
Acting U.S. Consular General JoEllen Gorg described the ‘Window on America’ as a symbol of strong leadership and innovation, part of a network of 29 American spaces across Nigeria.
Facilities: Modern computers, high-speed internet, and access to billions of academic resources via e-libraries.
Target Audience: Students, entrepreneurs, teachers, and creatives seeking skills in leadership, technology, and entrepreneurship.
Encouragement: Gorg urged youths to maximize the hub’s resources, assuring them of America’s continued support.
Debo Omololu, CEO of GFA Technologies, revealed that his firm has invested N400 million in Ogun State, creating over 1,000 jobs in software engineering. He encouraged youths to leverage the initiative to stay competitive in the digital economy.
