Governor Nwifuru Condemns Killing Of Ebonyi Indigenes In Anambra, Demands Urgent Probe
Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has strongly condemned the killing of no fewer than 13 Ebonyi indigenes in Ogboji community, Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, describing it as a barbaric and senseless act of violence.
The attack occurred on Monday evening when unidentified gunmen stormed a community meeting in Ogboji, arriving in two SUVs and opening fire indiscriminately, The PUNCH gathered. The victims, all Ebonyi indigenes, were reportedly holding their routine monthly gathering when the assailants struck.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor, Governor Nwifuru expressed outrage over the incident and called for a swift, transparent investigation.
“This senseless act of violence against law-abiding citizens is not only barbaric but a direct assault on peace, unity, and the sanctity of human life,” Nwifuru stated. “It defies reason that a peaceful meeting of Ebonyi people would be targeted and brutally attacked.”
The governor emphasized that the act was wholly unacceptable and urged for urgent action to ensure justice is served. He revealed that he had reached out to the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, appealing for immediate and thorough investigation into the killings.
Governor Nwifuru expressed confidence that the Anambra government and security agencies would take swift action to apprehend those responsible. He warned that any failure to act decisively could strain the long-standing relationship between the two states.
“While Governor Nwifuru awaits the outcome of these investigations, he has earnestly appealed to Ebonyi people, particularly the affected families and communities, to remain calm and refrain from any form of reprisal or actions that may escalate tensions.
“Such barbarism has no place in modernity and state arsenals will be deployed to unmask the perpetrators of the bloody killings” the Governor assured.
“The administration in Ebonyi State remains committed to protecting the lives and property of Ebonyi people both at home and in the diaspora.”
