Nigerian Entrepreneur Barred from US Despite Valid Visa, Cites Social Media Scrutiny
A Nigerian businesswoman has gone viral after posting a tearful video detailing her experience of being denied entry into the United States despite holding a valid B1/B2 visa.
In the video, recorded aboard her return flight to Nigeria and widely circulated on Sunday, she explained that she had travelled to Texas intending to participate in a trade fair. However, upon landing, she was detained by US immigration officials for 24 hours and subjected to extensive interrogation.
“I was denied entrance into the US because my visa is a B1–B2, which is for tourism and business meetings,” she said, visibly emotional.
According to her account, immigration officers scrutinized her digital footprint, including her Instagram account and private conversations with clients. She recounted how this online activity was used against her to challenge the legitimacy of her stated purpose for the trip.
“I told them I was going to exhibit. I didn’t know better… but they checked everything my Instagram, my chats with customers, messages saying they could pick up their orders,” she explained through tears.
The woman’s experience underscores growing concerns over how personal online content, especially social media activity, can be leveraged by immigration authorities to assess travelers’ intentions sometimes with life-altering consequences.
