Barcelona to Return to Camp Nou on August 10 for Joan Gamper Friendly
After a two-year absence, FC Barcelona will finally return to a partially reopened Camp Nou on August 10 for the traditional Joan Gamper Trophy friendly, the club announced on Wednesday. The game will serve as a symbolic homecoming as the iconic stadium undergoes extensive expansion and modernization.
Dubbed a “symbolic and emotional step into the future” by the club, the event will not mark full completion of the revamped Camp Nou. Major construction projects including a new third tier, a dual VIP ring, roof installation, revamped interior facilities, and the redevelopment of surrounding infrastructure are still ongoing.
Although Barcelona did not disclose the initial capacity for the friendly, Spanish media reports suggest that around 35,000 seats will be available in the completed lower sections of the stadium.
The return match is part of the larger “Espai Barça” project, a massive overhaul of the club’s facilities that has faced multiple delays since it began in 2023. The full project, now expected to conclude by summer 2026, will ultimately increase the Camp Nou’s capacity to 105,000, making it one of the largest stadiums in Europe.
To accommodate continued construction, Barça has asked La Liga to schedule their first three games of the 2025/26 season away from home, giving builders more time to finish key components of the stadium.
During renovations, Barcelona played their home matches at the 55,000-capacity Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys on Montjuïc hill, a temporary but less-than-ideal home for the Spanish champions.
As Barcelona fans prepare to reclaim their historic ground, the August 10 fixture promises not only football but also a nostalgic glimpse into a new chapter of Camp Nou’s storied legacy.
