The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day weather outlook predicting a blend of sunny skies, cloud cover, and thunderstorms across various parts of the country from Monday to Wednesday.

In the statement released Sunday in Abuja, NiMet outlined that northern states will experience sunny conditions with patches of cloud in the morning, followed by isolated thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in the afternoons and evenings, particularly in Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Adamawa, Kebbi, and Kaduna.

For the central states, a similar pattern is expected. Sunny to partly cloudy skies are forecast in the morning, giving way to thunderstorms and moderate rain later in the day across Plateau, Benue, the Federal Capital Territory, Kwara, Nasarawa, and Niger.

In the southern belt, cloudy mornings are on the horizon, with Akwa Ibom likely to see early showers. The afternoons and evenings, however, are expected to bring widespread thunderstorms and light to moderate rains across most states, including Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Delta, Edo, Ogun, Oyo, Rivers, Bayelsa, and Cross River.

Tuesday’s forecast continues the trend of patchy clouds in the north during the morning, with potential for thunderstorms and light rain in Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina, Kano, and Jigawa. Later in the day, heavier rain is anticipated in Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, and other parts of the region.

The central states are expected to wake up to morning thunderstorms and light rain, especially in the FCT, Benue, Niger, Kwara, Plateau, and Kogi. By evening, these areas will likely see renewed thunderstorms and moderate rainfall.

In the south, expect morning cloudiness with the likelihood of heavy rains developing later, especially in Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Lagos, Ogun, Ondo, and Edo.

By Wednesday, light rain and thunderstorms are forecast for the northwestern corridor; Kebbi, Zamfara, and Sokoto , while the rest of the northern region will see sunshine with light cloud cover early on, and moderate rain moving in later.

The central states will start the day with intervals of sunshine and clear skies, before giving way to afternoon and evening thunderstorms and rainfall.

Southern regions will again experience cloudy mornings, with the day culminating in thunderstorms and potentially heavy rain.

Precautionary Advice

NiMet advised Nigerians to secure loose objects that might be swept away by strong winds, which are expected to precede many thunderstorms. The agency also warned against driving during heavy rainfall, encouraged unplugging of electrical appliances during storms, and cautioned against sheltering under trees.

Airline operators were urged to obtain updated weather reports specific to their routes for safer flight operations. Residents were also encouraged to stay updated through NiMet’s official website.
