At least 265 bodies have been recovered from the wreckage of the London-bound passenger jet that crashed into a residential area in Ahmedabad, India, on Friday.

The Air India flight lost contact with air traffic control shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad airport.

Among those on board were 53 British nationals, 169 Indians, 7 Portuguese, and 1 Canadian.

Providing an update, Deputy Commissioner of Police Kanan Desai confirmed that 265 bodies had been found so far, with indications that around 24 people on the ground may also have perished. Authorities warned that the death toll could rise as recovery efforts continue.

Rescue teams, including sniffer dogs, remain at the crash site, continuing the search for victims of the Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which was carrying 242 passengers and crew.
