NAF Initiates Investigation Into The Death Of A Detained Airman In Bauchi
The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has launched an investigation into the death of Corporal A. S. Wulumba, who reportedly died while in custody at a guardroom under the Bauchi Command.
Wulumba was allegedly detained for reporting late to his duty post, a delay his family believes was caused by health issues. His sister, Numdarai Wulumba, told reporters that he informed her of his detention on May 4, 2025.
“Detention for minor offences like lateness is not supposed to exceed 24 hours, according to military rules. He should have been court-martialled if necessary, not locked up indefinitely. Now he’s gone,” she said.
According to his sister, Wulumba had explained to his commander that his late arrival was due to a medical condition, but the explanation was dismissed, and he was ordered into confinement.
In response to the incident, the NAF Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Edward Gabkwet, expressed condolences over the airman’s death and confirmed that a board of inquiry had been established.
He assured that the Nigerian Air Force remains committed to transparency and accountability in investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The loss of any of our personnel is profoundly felt across the Service. In line with standard procedure, a board of inquiry has been convened to ascertain the circumstances surrounding his death.Further information will be provided as the investigation progresses. The NAF remains committed to the welfare of its personnel and to upholding the highest standards of accountability and transparency,” he said.
