OAU Students Union Demands Urgent Action on Escalating Off-Campus Robberies
“One student lost her phone. Another had his car stolen, and all the money in his account transferred, leaving him with nothing,” the Union said
In a strongly-worded statement, the Student Union leadership has expressed grave concerns over escalating security threats facing students. Union Secretary General Babatimehin Kinfeosi and President Omoboriowo Isaac revealed that the student body now lives in constant fear, with many afraid to remain in their own residences due to the unpredictable nature of the attacks.
“Students no longer feel safe in their homes, perpetually anxious about who might be targeted next,” the statement read.
The Union leadership criticized what they describe as a pattern of inadequate law enforcement response, noting that despite repeated official reports to police following each incident, no effective measures have been implemented to address the security crisis.
“We have visited nearby police stations and even the Osun State Criminal Investigation Department. Yet, there has been no tangible improvement,” it stated.
“Behind every case is a student who has been traumatised, brutalised, extorted, and left helpless,” the statement read. “Phones are being stolen. Monies are being wiped from students’ bank accounts. Hostels are being broken into in the dead of night. And, even worse, students are being severely injured.”
The Union cited a particularly gruesome incident in which a student was macheted in the head during a robbery at his hostel. The student is reportedly in critical condition and receiving hospital care.
Adding to the growing concern, the Union reported that four more robberies were carried out in three separate locations just hours before the press release was issued.
The students are now calling for immediate intervention from security agencies and relevant authorities to restore safety in the area.
