Smokey Robinson Files \$500M Countersuit Against Housekeepers Over Assault Allegations
American singer-songwriter and producer Smokey Robinson has filed a $500 million counterclaim against four former employees who earlier sued him for $50 million, accusing him of sexual battery, assault, and false imprisonment.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating the allegations but has yet to present the case to the District Attorney. Robinson denies all accusations.
In the countersuit, Smokey and Frances Robinson accuse the women of defamation, alleging that the claims made at a press conference three weeks ago are false and slanderous. They argue that the women, whom they treated as “extended family,” even shared holidays and vacations with the couple, as shown in photos and text messages.
The accusers have said they did not report the alleged abuse earlier due to fear of losing their jobs and the embarrassment involved.
The Robinsons’ complaint claims they did not abuse, harm, or take advantage of the plaintiffs, adding: “Unfortunately, the depths of the plaintiffs’ avarice and greed know no bounds.”
The Robinsons are also alleging financial elder abuse, saying the women have caused them “loss of income and assets set aside for retirement or for personal or family care and maintenance.”
The Robinsons’ legal team has filed a motion to strike the original lawsuit filed against them by “four Jane Does” and has asked them to re-file it using their real names.
Their attorneys, John Harris and Herbert Hayden, called Wednesday’s actions “nothing more than an attempt to silence and intimidate the survivors of Mr. Robinson’s sexual battery and assault.”
“It is a baseless and vindictive legal manoeuvre designed to re-victimise, shift blame and discourage others from coming forward.”
They say this cross-complaint “will not stand.”
