Trump Defends Blocking Foreign Students At Harvard, Citing Transparency Concerns

On Sunday, United States President Donald Trump defended his administration’s decision to prevent Harvard University from enrolling foreign students, despite a court ruling temporarily blocking the move.

Posting on his Truth Social platform, Trump criticised the prestigious institution for having nearly 31% of its student body made up of international students, arguing that these students’ home countries do not contribute financially to the university.

“We want to know who those foreign students are, a reasonable request since we give Harvard billions of dollars, but Harvard isn’t exactly forthcoming,” the president stated.

The controversy began last week when Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem revoked Harvard’s authority to admit foreign nationals.

Noem had previously warned Harvard University to disclose information on student visa holders allegedly involved in “illegal and violent activities,” warning of potential consequences if they failed to comply.

In response, Harvard filed a lawsuit accusing the federal government of acting in an “arbitrary, capricious, unlawful, and unconstitutional” manner.

A federal judge promptly issued a suspension of the government’s directive, temporarily allowing the university to continue enrolling international students.

The Trump administration’s actions are part of a broader effort targeting American universities, citing concerns about anti-Semitism and what officials describe as overly expansive diversity programs.

Additionally, the administration has revoked visas and deported foreign students involved in pro-Palestinian protests, alleging connections to Hamas, a designated Palestinian militant group.

Last month, Harvard had $2.2 billion in federal funding frozen, and earlier this month, the Department of Education threatened to cut off the university’s research grants entirely.
