Woman Charged in Kano Court for Having Two Husbands

A woman, Harira Muhammad Tudun Murtala, has been arraigned before a Kano Upper Shari’a Court for allegedly marrying two husbands simultaneously. Murtala’s first marriage, to Sagiru Shuaibu T/Murtala, had lasted six months, but they had been living separately. The situation came to light when Sagiru visited Murtala’s home and reportedly found another man in his matrimonial bed. He immediately alerted neighbors. When Murtala appeared before the court, she initially denied being married to her first husband. However, after the judge ordered her to swear by the Qur’an, she retracted her statement.
