New WhatsApp Feature Prevents Others From Exporting Your Chats
WhatsApp has introduced a new privacy feature called Advanced Chat Privacy, designed to prevent users from exporting the contents of a chat. This update enhances control over message sharing and boosts security for sensitive conversations.
The feature is now available in the latest version of the app. To activate it, open any individual or group chat, tap the chat name at the top, and toggle on Advanced Chat Privacy. Once enabled, it restricts the ability to export messages from that chat, helping to keep your conversations more secure and private.
“When the setting is on, you can block others from exporting chats, auto-downloading media to their phone, and using messages for AI features,” WhatsApp says.
WhatsApp says the goal of Advanced Chat Privacy is to give users “greater confidence that no one can take what is being said outside the chat.
” This makes it especially useful for sensitive conversations in groups where not everyone may be closely acquainted — like health support forums, community welfare groups, or other private discussions.
By restricting the export of chat content, the feature helps ensure that shared information stays within the intended circle, reinforcing trust and confidentiality in group interactions.
This initial rollout of Advanced Chat Privacy is just a starting point, and WhatsApp plans to strengthen it with future updates. For now, though, there are a few limitations. A spokesperson told The Verge that:
It doesn’t prevent users from taking screenshots.
Media can still be saved manually to a user’s device.
It’s unclear whether message forwarding is blocked — clarification from Meta is pending.
As always, even with privacy features, the best defense is caution. If a conversation is sensitive, it’s important to trust your contacts—since no digital safeguard can stop someone from using another device to snap a photo of your screen.
