Senator Nwebonyi Says False Accusations By Women Against Men Should Be Condemned In Any Situation
Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, representing Ebonyi North, has urged women in politics to show respect to their male counterparts.
Speaking at an empowerment event in Abakaliki on April 23, the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate criticized what he described as growing disrespect by some women toward men in political spaces. While not naming anyone, he warned that such actions could negatively affect the future of women in Nigerian politics.
“I support women’s inclusion in politics, but not at the expense of men’s dignity,” he said. “Telling a man to ‘shut up’ in the Senate or elsewhere is unacceptable. Those who can’t show respect should be shown the way out of politics.”
His comments come amid an ongoing feud with Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who has accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment. Nwebonyi previously clashed with former Minister of Education Oby Ezekwesili during the Senate hearing and is now facing a N5 billion defamation lawsuit filed by Akpoti-Uduaghan.
The lawsuit follows remarks made by Senator Nwebonyi during an appearance on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily on March 6, 2025, where he referred to Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan as a “gold digger,” “habitual liar,” and “habitual blackmailer.”
Akpoti-Uduaghan maintains that these claims are completely false, malicious, and defamatory, forming the basis of her N5 billion defamation suit against Nwebonyi.
