Vance Urges Russia And Ukraine To Accept Peace Terms Or Face U.S. Ending Talks
U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance’s comments on Wednesday marked a significant shift in the United States’ stance on the Ukraine conflict, warning that Washington could abandon efforts to broker a ceasefire unless Moscow and Kyiv come to terms on the current proposal. Speaking during a visit to India, Vance emphasized that both Russia and Ukraine had been presented with a very clear proposal and that it was now up to them to either accept it or for the U.S. to step away from the negotiations.
This statement mirrors earlier remarks by President Donald Trump, who has expressed frustration with the lack of progress on peace talks. The timing of Vance’s comments is crucial, as U.S. and European diplomats notably skipped a new round of peace talks in London, signaling a potential shift in diplomatic priorities.
The ceasefire discussions are now being handled by senior officials, with little involvement from top diplomats, which could suggest that Washington is growing increasingly impatient with the lack of meaningful engagement from both sides in the conflict.
Vance’s comments underline the ongoing tension and the increasing pressure on both Russia and Ukraine to come to the negotiating table, with the U.S. indicating that it may no longer be willing to play a central role if there is no movement towards peace.
“It’s now time, I think, to take, if not the final step, one of the final steps — which is, at a broad level, the parties saying we’re going to stop the killing, we’re going to freeze the territorial lines at some level close to where they are today,” Vance said.
He acknowledged the plan would require both Russia and Ukraine to
“give up some of the territory they currently own.”
