Leeds United and Burnley secured their spots in the Premier League on Monday, capitalizing on Sheffield United’s slip in the penultimate round of the Championship season.

Leeds earned their return to the top tier for the first time since the 2022/23 campaign with a dominant 6-0 victory over Stoke City at Elland Road. Meanwhile, Burnley sealed their immediate return to the Premier League with a 2-1 win over Sheffield United at Turf Moor.

Joel Piroe starred for Leeds with a sensational display, scoring four goals to inspire Daniel Farke’s team to a commanding win. The Dutch striker, who hadn’t scored since February, completed a hat-trick within the first 20 minutes and added a fourth before halftime.

Junior Firpo contributed with a goal of his own, and Wilfried Gnonto wrapped up the scoring in the 59th minute.

Leeds manager Daniel Farke, who previously led Norwich City in the Premier League, praised his squad for their composure and resilience under pressure.

“To deliver such an emphatic performance is really amazing and all the credit goes to the boys,” he told the BBC. On Piroe’s return to form, he added, “It’s a bit like shaking a bottle of ketchup — all of a sudden everything comes out and that was a bit the case today.”

Leeds United overcame a shaky March—where they managed just one win in six matches—raising concerns of another play-off setback. But with a resurgence in form, the league’s most prolific side, boasting 89 goals, have now strung together four consecutive victories and sit level on 94 points with Burnley.

At Turf Moor, Burnley captain Josh Brownhill led by example, scoring twice to clinch promotion and extend the team’s impressive defensive record.

The Clarets, who have conceded only 15 goals all season, are now unbeaten in 31 matches. Brownhill struck first in the 28th minute and calmly converted a penalty before halftime, shortly after Tom Cannon had equalized for Sheffield United.

The result confirmed that Chris Wilder’s side, stuck on 86 points, can no longer catch the top two and will have to fight through the Championship play-offs.

As Burnley celebrated their return on the pitch, jubilant scenes unfolded at Elland Road, where Leeds players—having secured their win earlier in the day—erupted with joy as confirmation of promotion came with the final whistle.

“We’ve been written off so many times, people calling us boring. We’ve bored our way to the Premier League,” Brownhill said. “It takes a whole team — it’s not just a back four, a goalkeeper, it takes everybody.”

Sheffield United, with just one win in their last five matches, are assured of finishing third and must now navigate the challenge of earning promotion via the play-offs.
