US Approves $5.58 Billion Fighter-Jet Deal for Philippines

The United States on Tuesday approved a $5.58 billion sale of F-16 fighter jets to the Philippines, reinforcing its support for the Southeast Asian nation amid rising tensions with China.

According to the State Department, the deal includes 20 F-16 jets and related equipment for the Philippines, a treaty-bound ally of the U.S.

In a statement, the State Department said the sale aims to enhance the security of a key strategic partner that plays a vital role in maintaining political stability, peace, and economic progress in Southeast Asia.

The sale is also expected to strengthen the Philippine Air Force’s capability in maritime domain awareness and improve its ability to suppress enemy air defenses.

The administration of President Donald Trump had sought to shift U.S. military focus toward Asia to counter China’s growing influence, particularly as tensions escalate over Taiwan, while reducing involvement in Europe despite Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Philippines and China have faced increasing confrontations in the South China Sea, with Beijing claiming nearly the entire waterway despite an international ruling rejecting its claims.

During a recent visit to Manila, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth pledged to reinforce deterrence in the Indo-Pacific region in response to threats from China.

Meanwhile, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has reaffirmed U.S. defense commitments to the Philippines, marking a shift from the Trump administration’s past criticisms of allies relying on American military support.
